Our goal was to create a cookbook with recipes for food and drink that either appear in Mad Men or were served in the 1960s by the types of bars and restaurants featured in the show. Some of the establishments frequented by Don Draper and his colleagues provided many of the recipes in this book, including Sardi’s, Keens Steak House, P. J. Clarke’s the Oak Bar, the Beverly Hills Hotel, and many more.
We also wanted to remain true to how the food and drink we selected would have been prepared in the early 1960s. We pored over hundreds of cookbooks, magazines, and advertisements from the 1950s and 1960s in our pursuit of information and ideas, and looked for cookbooks the characters might have used.
We also offer historical context —information about the restaurants, hotels, foods, chefs, and personalities that shaped the culinary landscape of the times.
Whether you like to cook, eat, drink, or simply enjoy devouring all things Mad Men, our hope is that this book will enhance your appreciation of the show and enrich your understanding of the time in which it is set.
